after having seen: Benjamin Button, Dark Knight, Changeling, The Wrestler, and even Gran Torino, which I loved, this movie takes the cake. It held my interest thoroughly trying to see if what she saw was true. The spirited acting between demanding, unmerciless Streep and defensive, incredulous at her actions Hoffman was outstanding. The mother of the boy was superb. If anyone had doubts about whether the priest did or he didn't, I don't think so. The clue was when the Mother said he needed the priest, even if he was just a friend, he needed a man in his life to share his terrible burden with. How horrible a person portrayed by Streep to be so single minded as to try to destroy a person. The shame is they are out there.........

This film was over rated. The acting and direction were great but it was a dull story that we have heard way too many times before. This should have been a short film or an independent feature. Let's face it, without those big names headlining the title no one would have ever seen this. I'm in a very generous mood so I'll give it three stars.

It was the most over rated movie of the recent years. It offered nothing exciting, stimulating, romantic, etc. It might have been an O.K. play but not a movie.

The subject matter of this movie was very heavy, of course, but it was tastefully dealt with. Meryl Streep gave one of her finest performances yet and Amy Adams was perfect for her role. The only part that I didn't care for was how the mother of the boy that was abused responded went presented with the truth. That was very disturbing. Otherwise, I thought that this was an excellent film.

Just a note to those who haven't seen Doubt...if you're looking for entertainment, this isn't it. This is a depressing and disturbing story. The acting and directing are top notch but the only thing I'll take away from seeing this film is that I've very glad I wasn't raised Catholic.

Not a good movie... It wants to cover a lot more than what the Catholic Church will ever allow to be shown. So, i was trully dissapointed. Not as good as i thought i could have been!

I saw the movie for the second time which I rarely do at my age. I loved it just as much the second time. I wanted to focus on MS (aka Sister Aloysius) statement "I have Doubts". I agree with Olan5 and the others. She did not doubt the priests inappropriate behavior, she had her doubts about g-d,the patriarchy of the Christian church and her choices as a nun. MS was brilliant and I wanted to take a shower after Phillip Seymour Hoffmans' performance so he was billiant too!

Reply: I think this movie shows aspects of daily life in 1964 that are accurate. I liked the movie because It is a relavent topic to anyone in any year. I also agree a lot with the following post which has a small spoiler alert. (It does not tell how the movie ends, or how everyone ends up.) People often struggle spiritually with bad things that happen and wonder why God allows them. I really liked this movie and will buy a copy of it. &&&&&&&&&&&& syllabubjones Great movie, stellar performances. This movie was written, directed and acted superbly. I was especially impressed with the depth Meryl Streep showed in her portrayal. ***spoiler alert*** For those of us who've seen it, when she says "I have doubts", it is not that she has doubts about her decision... she says moments before that she is sure... she has doubts about a G-d who would allow such awful things to occur, doubts about the patriarchy of the Christian church, doubts about the life she has chosen, etc. She knew the priest was guilty in her heart and in her mind, and when she challenged him with the claim of having spoken with the nun from his previous church, she caught him in his lie and confirmed her suspicions definitively. 01/05/2009, 2:38 am

I was prepared not to like this movie because I was more in the mood for something lighthearted but I became engrossed in it from the beginning. As others have noted, the acting and script are top notch. Some people have stated that they feel the movie should have been longer in order to neatly tie it up. But that was the beauty of the film; it gives the viewer the opportunity to decide for themselves and leaves you thinking about how important it is not to gossip because once something is "out", you can't take it back. I believe when Streep's character says "I have doubts" she is definitely meaning personal belief doubts. This movie would not appeal to all viewers but clearly sticks with you after you leave the theater.
