  • Baumbach, in his most compassionate film since The Squid and the Whale, catches Frances in the act of inventing herself. It's a glorious sight to see. show more

  • Frances Ha also marks the rare instance in which an actress has the perfect role at the perfect time. Ms. Gerwig's work here is fragile, delicate, subject to bruising; something that could wither under too much attention. Perhaps Ms. Gerwig is the greatest actress alive. And maybe Frances Ha is just the ghost orchid of independent cinema. show more

  • The director mixes moods with a playfulness that is both brazen and carefree and yet precisely modulated, yielding results that amplify the specific content of the screenplay. This makes for a film that, however cheap it was to make, is incredibly rich to watch. show more

I went into Frances Ha with high expectations given my love for the Squid and the Whale and my like of Greta Gerwig in Greenberg. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed. In short, the characters and dialogue were not believable to me, and for me, that is a big problem.

Quirky. Black and white. Awkward moments, but charming. I liked this movie a lot because Frances Ha is adorable and she says funny things. I just want to give her a hug and a kiss.
