Gattaca is a wonderful movie. The musical score's underlying theme is powerful, yet sorrowful. It plays well to the theme of Gattaca. This theme is about believing in yourself when others won't. It is about succeeding when others hold you back. It is about having hope when things seem hopeless. And finally it is about courage.....or maybe the roots of courage. It was the last swimming contest between Vincent and Anton that defined Vincent's courage. As Anton was giving up and heading back to shore he shouted to Vincent, "I can't make it, I've got to go back!" Vincent responds, "Come on, keep going, it's closer to the other side." Anton responds, "What other side? You're going to kill both of us! Vincent, how have you done all of this?" Vincent reveals his secret, "This is how I did it Anton.....I never left anything for the trip back...." The 'other side' was death. Vincent wasn't afraid of dying. And perhaps that's where courage starts and fear ends
