Nobuhiko Obayashi directs this real-life account of growing up hearing-impaired in Japanese society. The film centers on Namiko (Yuri Nakae) and Masahiro (Ryo Amaniya) -- two deaf penpals who live on opposite sides of the country. Signing her letters "Mickey" after the world's most famous rodent, Namiko is a young sheltered lass who never really felt her disability until she her first day in class at a design college. On the other hand, Masahiro, who signed his letters "Rock 'n' Roller Jimmy", was a noted junior high school delinquent who eventually lands a job as a shift worker on a Nissan assembly line and who trains to become an athlete. When Namiko ventures to Tokyo, she meets Masahiro and soon their relationship rapidly evolves to cohabitation and marriage.
