Besides being a feast for the eyes and ears, Les Misérables overflows with humor, heartbreak, rousing action and ravishing romance. Damn the imperfections, it's perfectly marvelous. show more

Fans of Les Misérables wouldn't have minded if the movie were different, but better, or just as effective. The screen version demanded some reconception, some vision to make sense of its existence. Instead, we're left with a film that is conscientious in all its particulars and yet strangely and mysteriously dead. show more

Les Misérables is sweeping, as would be expected given the scope of the hugely popular stage musical from which it is adapted. But it's also wonderfully intimate, thanks to Tom Hooper's deft direction. show more

This "Les Mis" does make you feel, intensely and sometimes thrillingly, by honoring the emotional core of its source material. show more

If you love Les Mis the stage musical, my guess is you will love what Hooper and his bustling company have done. But when you hear "Master of the House" and you think of the Seinfeld episode with Elaine's gruff dad belting the tune before you think of those shifty innkeepers the Thénardiers, then you may want to steer clear of this grand endeavor. show more

Fortunately, this sprawling epic is well-anchored. There cannot be a better big-screen showman than Jackman. show more

As the enduring success of this property has shown, there are large, emotionally susceptible segments of the population ready to swallow this sort of thing, but that doesn't mean it's good. show more

Even at a generous running time that matches this season's other giant award candidates, Les Misérables seems like it's in a hurry, skittering from one number to the next without interlude. After Hathaway's early high point, it starts to feel numbing, an unending barrage of musical emoting carrying us through Valjean's adopting of Cosette, the latter's first encounter with Marius, the battle at the barricade and a last hour that can feel like it's a non-stop series of death arias. show more

It's also a testament to the strength of Claude-Michel Schonberg's music that everything after the show-stopping lament of Fantine's "I Dreamed a Dream" doesn't come across as so much padding. show more

Les Miserables understandably cuts some of the stage production's numbers, but all of the major anthems are intact and wonderfully presented. show more

Great costumes, sets and music. The actors could\'ve been cast for voices, but that didn\'t happen. 3 hours is a very long movie, and although some of the songs were memorable the repetition of the major themes is too obvious. Not as good as the stage play.

with 5 friends i watched his movie in the theatre. All off us about halfway through the movie decided it wasn\'t worth sitting through. It brings a new light to the word miserable.

Oh - my - God! I can only assume \"miserables\" is French for miserables because I was miserable sitting through this abominable movie. My wife hated it also, and that\'s saying something. I can imagine sitting through a rap version of MacBeth might be easier to stomach.

Worst musical film ever...the Broadway musical was great...but here the director cast actors who can\'t sing! THE basic ingredient to a muical. It\'s an inspiring story and the actors worked really hard but director blew it...

Couldn't complete review below. It's a metaphor for the redemption of humanity by God and how He expects us to live it out: In ABJECT loving service to others, as does Valjean. Les Miserables is the godliest, sweetest, most humane and loving film that I have ever had the honor of seeing.

I only went on the recommendation of an elderly aunt that had seen the show. How glad I was that I went. Fabulous acting, singing, costumes and all round entertainment. Now I\'ve been twice and can\'t wait for the DVD.Thoroughly worthy of an Oscar nomination, and to win! Definitely my favourite.
