This movie started as an interesting time piece, but was otherwise horribly flawed. (I normally give good reviews btw.) Dali's mother died of breast cancer, his father then married his mothers sister. Dali met and revered Pablo Picaso. Dali by all reports avoided touch, including sex, but loved to watch. His father hated his wife, he joined and was cast out of the surrealist movement. Cher recounted Dali's clothing optional semi-orgy style parties. And the list goes on. The film ignores nearly all of these details, at best mentioning them or showing them in as brief a fashion as is possible. It instead chooses to make Dali one dimensional. It focuses on showcasing his purported love affair with poet Lorca. I care about Dali the painter, the eccentric, the writer, the sculptor, the son, the husband, the brilliant but rebellious student, the promoter, the genius etc at least as much as Dali the (supposed) gay man. Yet that is nearly the entire focus of this movie. The movie gives limited insight into who Dali truely was, and instead shows a gay relationship that according to evidence might not have been. Dali could have been a mechanic or sandwich maker and it would have made no difference. Do ********* this movie unless you want to see one gay seen after another.

I was expecting this film to be in poor taste with raunchy sex scenes given all of the reviews I had read. I actually ended up really enjoying it! The first twenty minutes were a little cheesy though, especially Dali. However, the rest of the movie was a really great love story with a bitter-sweet ending. I wonder if it got bad reviews because people were expecting it to be more of a biography of Salvador Dali. It was obvious to me that it was never intended to be much more than a love story. I would definitely watch it again and recommend it to others.
