Plot Summary

After nearly four decades together, Ben (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) finally tie the knot in an idyllic wedding ceremony in lower Manhattan.  But when George loses his job soon after, the couple must sell their apartment and – victims of the relentless New York City real estate market - temporarily live apart until they can find an affordable new home.  While George moves in with two cops (Cheyenne Jackson and Manny Perez) who live down stairs, Ben lands in Brooklyn with his nephew (Darren Burrows), his wife (Marisa Tomei), and their temperamental teenage son (Charlie Tahan), with whom Ben shares a bedroom.  While struggling with the pain of separation, Ben and George are further challenged by the intergenerational tensions and capricious family dynamics of their new living arrangements.

  • Love Is Strange is, above all, a triumph for Lithgow and Molina, two consummate actors who bring decades of experience to artful performances that are as emotionally expressive in silence as they are in words. Acting doesn’t get better than this. Want to know what love is? Watch Lithgow and Molina and learn. show more

  • See Love Is Strange for its sensitivity and understated jokes, but mainly for Lithgow and Molina's expertly modulated work, which pulls the movie back when it threatens to stray into melodrama or heavy-handedness. show more

  • What's on screen, though, is a peculiar clutter of gentle sentiment, awkward dialogue, shaky contrivance — especially the resolution of Joey's feelings — and monotonous performances from a supporting cast that includes Marisa Tomei and Darren Burrows. show more

What infuriating drivel. The idea that these two men, with 130 years of life between them and no dependents, couldn't put away a few dollars to carry them into their golden years is ridiculous. But of course they're artists, so this kind of failure is somehow acceptable. Watch this film and then think of all the hardworking families out there struggling to survive by working in factories and fast food restaurants, while these two self-indulgent slobs nap all afternoon and feel sorry for themselves. Two college educated white men in America who can't figure out how to feed themselves. Total nonsense.

Lithgow gave an award performance. It's the best film he's has ever made. Some may not like the story, but it is violance free and expresses love you may have never seen before. Difinitely an oscar contender. Jerry Journeay

Can't agree with so called "critics" who praise it to the hilt. Yes, the compelling acting kept it somewhat interesting, but it seemed like a stage play that was scene-oriented instead of a nicely flowing film story. Lots of unanswered pieces here and there as it merrily skips along with some scenes toooo long and others missing.
