    Maitland McDonagh TV Guide

The first half of Lover's film is surprisingly affecting...But the film comes apart in its second half, when James' flight triggers a long series of flashbacks to the brothers' childhood. show more

My Brother is brimming with would-be life lessons. But the movie goes in so many directions, and follows through on so few of them, that all it transmits is a vague glow. It's watered-down chicken soup for the soul. show more

The movie's strongest element is the chemistry between the reflective Mr. Kearse and Mr. Scott (who really has Down syndrome). Improving on its obvious antecedent in "Dominick and Eugene," their relationship feels real, not like a movie contrivance. show more

Writer-director Anthony Lover takes such a kid-gloves approach to his handicapped co-star that he achieves the opposite of the intended effect: Every time Scott enters a scene, it's as if someone just told the entire cast "Whatever you do, don't say 'retard.' " show more

Vanessa Williams in a great actress and is fabulous in this movie as are the actors that portray her boys, Isaiah and James. The storyline is very touching and emotional and is centered around around a young man who is stuggling to survive as he takes care of his adult brother who is "special." The story flash backs to the boys when they were 7 and 10 and their mom (Vanessa Williams) is dying. Isaiah's love for his brother and the mothers love for her children are amazing and shine trough very convincing throughout the movie. If you like outstanding acting, and good solid drama, you'll love this film. I stumbled upon it after almost giving up. I've seen no trailers and there's not even a summary of it on the movie sites I visited, and it is playing at only 2 or 3 theaters in the area. I only went to see it because I love Vanessa in acting roles. It's a shame that such a good movie is not getting its due.
