In many Third World countries, babies are not born in hospitals, nor are they delivered by physicians. Many children are brought into the world by women like Mai Mafuta, a midwife in Zimbabwe. Known as a nyamakuta, she has received lessons in modern delivery methods, but finds that in her day-to-day dealings with mothers, a mix of the old and new work best. Nyamakuta: The One Who Receives - An African Midwife reveals Mai's sorrow when she speaks of her own daughter, who died during childbirth before Mai acquired her training.
