Beautiful story and animation. I've seen it many times with my 4 year old grand daughter who can't wait to see it again and again. I loved it!

I appreciate your comment Apser. Wow! Anime DONE COMPLETELY BY HAND!!! When Miyazaki is gone, this will become a truely lost art. Art is created by human hands, NOT A COMPUTER PROGRAM. The idea that Ponyo could be less that art because it's not computer generated is indeed offensive. Clearly, some of us were indeed raised different in being able to fully appreciate art.

whenever I read a review that says "the animation was old fashioned" I wonder how old the writer is.. 12? The fact that there are still 'artists' like miyazaki who 'choose' to make cartoons the old fashioned way is a blessing, and considering that I'll take any bugs bunny cartoon over 90% of the CGI stuff these days - It's a beautifle magical film, and the bunch of children in the theater when I went LOVED it, applauded laughed and more than a few parents expressed how enchanting it was - do not be fooled by the dweebs in this blog who clearly have no idea what a good film is if it bit them in the nose - see "Spirited Away" and "princess mononoke" to see the best of this directors work, however Ponyo is a masterpiece.

Yes, this is "Japanese" art by Miyazaki. But some would have to lower their standards of art appreciation in order to give this movie a positive review. Sorry, but the story is dumb and the animation is not high quality. Some may prefer a double cheeseburger over a New York Strip Steak. I can appreciate a cheeseburger for what it is, but a cheeseburger will never be a steak. Movies in the line of Open Season, Toy Story, Ice Age, Cars, The Incredibles, Madagascar, etc. is like eating steak. Ponyo is a mere cheeseburger in comparison.

There is a visual grandeur that appropriately matches the emotional landscape of the characters. In his last three films, Miyazaki used the assistance of computers, which was appropriate in creating a sharper-edged look and sense of speed for those more action oriented films. Miyazaki has abandoned all technology and it suits the film fine. There is a rustic, genuine quality to the film. The pastel colors of the film, which are truly magnificent, are able to blend into one another. There is a painterly quality to the animation that is a wonder to behold. The combinations of pinks and blues open new passageways into the mind’s imagination. Miyazaki has crafted yet another masterpiece that is both visually beautiful and emotionally profound, and all I can think to say is…Jason loves Ponyo! Ream my full review at http://cfilmc.com/

Many of the negative reviews on this film come from those who do not understand Japanese animation and the work of Miyazaki. Yes, the names are not American, that's because the story is SET IN JAPAN. I really enjoy the Studio Ghibli animation because it is very detailed. I do agree to a point with some of the critics on there that young children may not understand the story. Again, you must understand Japanese animation. Here in America, we seem to have this set rule that cartoons = children. Why do you think we had such an uproar when The Simpsons and Beavis and Butthead were originally introduced. In Japan, animation (or "anime") is mainly geared towards older audiences. It's only when anime reaches the states, it is usually destroyed, edited and watered down for "American eyes" (cases in point, Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura [aka Cardcaptors]). Perhaps if you take a moment to look at what is on the other side of the ocean, you may get an appreciation of what the world has to offer. I took my sister, her husband and their special needs 4-year old to see this film and everyone enjoyed it. The animation was spectacular and I commend Disney for keeping many of the original Japanese elements in the film (other studios have been know to "cover the kanji" and in some cases, I have even seen them reverse the steering wheels on cars) and that includes the character names. I strongly suggest everyone, even those without kids, to go see Ponyo and experience it. This is no Pokemon, Yuu-gi-oh or any of your typical Disney stuff. Ponyo is a masterpiece. Please support this film and support the ART of Japanese animation!

This movie was great! Ignore the bad reviews from the other people. My 5-year-old daughter loved it! It was her first movie in a real theater and she was entertained the entire time, as were all the other kids in the audience who randomly made comments and exclaimed various things throughout the movie. Definitely take your kids to see this winner!

This movie was possible THE WORST movie i have seen in my life. Miyasaki basically sold out to Disney by using the voices of Miley Cyrus's little sister and the Jonas Brothers little brother!!! They were so annoying!!! Also, there was no plot whatsoever! I was thrown into this movie without any background of what was happening, and then suddenly at the end i find out that this whole movie was about "saving humanity" when there was no mention of it before!! I hated it!!!!!!!!! Seriously it was an utter disappointment . I felt conned after i saw it. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON PONYO!!!!
