After reading some of the user reviews i suggest those who either did not like and or did not understand this movie, return to watching soap operas on TV. All professional reviews have been universally positive. Superb acting (Ann Hathaway, Debra Winger and crew), brilliant script by Jen Lumet on her first try, exceptional camera work to maintain atmosphere of the story, live music intertwined in the story line and all guided in the expert hands of J. Demme. I count six potential oscar nominations. So far this year this is my pick for best picture.

I had read both the critic' and user reviews of this movie before I saw it tonight and I was really surprised at the discrepancy. I think that so many American movies have put forth so much effort towards special effects, sets, and action scenes, but at the expense of other things like character development, plot, and emotive force. You really don't have to think too hard to go to the movies these days. So I thought that this movie was just going to be too smart or heady for the average moviegoer's taste or desire to be wisked away into a fantasy. Having gone with someone who is just as heady as I am when not watching movies, and who also happened to detest this film, I guess it boils down to different tastes. I loved this movie. I thought it was completely genuine, painfully and beautifully real, brilliantly acted and written, overall a true gem. In fact, I haven't seen a movie that I have enjoyed and appreciated this much in such a very long time, months if not more. It is not an action packed story, but a raw, truthful, and provactive look at family and the ties that bind them. It demostrates the polarity of good or bad, or stock characterizations, that we assign family members and how arbitrary, yet inevitable those assignments are. This movie for me was tintalating, but it clearly isn't for everyone. I suppose at the end of the day, you need to know what you want from a movie, for me, this was it.

This movie is about how the members of a family come to understand their own strengths and weaknesses as well as their dysfunctional relationships with each other. The movie emphasizes on the core family values and parental roles in raising children. If you pay enough attention in the movie, you will notice how the main character Kim came to understand her own feelings related to her brother’s death and who actually was responsible for his death. If you have a superficial view towards the world and looking for nothing but cheap entertainment, the movie does not provide that.

I am in the middle with this film. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. I felt that it started well. I got the feel of how on edge the characters were with Kym, however at the rehearsal dinner I was bored out of my mind. I kept thinking are they really going to go through everyone in the room. Yup they did. I was relieved when they went to Kym hoping it would end the torture, nope they just moved on to the other people. Big Yawn. The story of the family is great. The history of Kym and her little brother is the only thing that made me stay in my seat. But things like the dishwasher game took me right out of the movie again, until the plate was seen, and I was so glad, because it put the story back in focus. The wedding party was a little fun. I would love to enjoy a wedding like that. I was exciting at first but it was still too long. I was tired and wanted to go home at that point. But I stayed only to be completely confused by the ending.

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. Maybe I was expecting too much when I read the 5 star review in the Daily News. At no point was this movie funny even though its classified as a comedy. I want my $10 and 2 hours of my life back.

The movie should have been edited by about 45 minutes, unless you really enjoy hearing banal toasts and watching total strangers dance at a wedding. The Kym character was good, but not good enough to carry an otherwise dull movie.

My husband and I started watching this movie and walked out in the first 5 minutes. Just the camera work alone is worth walking out on. I was dizzy and nauseous for thirty minutes after leaving the theater. After reading some of the above reviews, I'm glad we left.

Sorry, I have to add to the negatives here. I usually love these kind of movies (great characters, conflict, good story) but this movie had none of these. It was tedious and sometimes painful to watch. It went on and on and said nothing! The acting was good, but certainly not enough to sustain this story. Based on the critics reviews, I has looking forward to seeing this movie. I didn't get it! What a disappointment!

Don't, I repeat, Don't waste your time or money on this dribble. Several people walked out during the movie. This is not entertainment. I would have walked during the first 5 minutes. Started bad, ended bad. A total downer. Sorry I hung around so long. I feel cheated. Total hogwash with plenty of social engineering and stereo typing mixed in. A totally messed up family without identity of who they are. Hollywood, you suck.

This movie is about a family, a dysfunctional family where a member of the family is an addict. The charm, power, and strength of this movie is that the characters could be us or our family or our friends. This is not an action packed run of the mill movie that many have come to expect from the technological age. This fabulous movie is one based on dialogue, interactions, and unspoken words. Hathaway gives a wonderful performance that will be remembered. This movie is a tribute to those addicts in recovery and trying to reenter society and the difficulties that they face. This is not a movie to watch over and over, but it is one that everyone should see at least once in their life.
