A family of Louisiana sharecroppers struggles to survive while living in poverty during the Great Depression. When Father (Carl Lumbly), a deeply religious man, must resort to stealing a ham to feed his wife (Suzzanne Douglas) and son (Daniel Lee Robertson III), he is arrested and sentenced to work on a chain gang at an undisclosed location. The boy leaves his mother and faithful dog Sounder behind, sets out to find his father, and learns many life lessons along the way.
