  • Dizzyingly incoherent and subversively surreal, this sophomore effort from the man who made the great, strange "Donnie Darko" is certain to have its fans. I'm not going to be one of them. show more

  • The English term "shambolic" best describes a slow-paced, bloated and self-indulgent picture that combines science fiction, sophomoric humor and grisly violence soaked in a music-video sensibility. show more

  • Delivers equal parts overwrought tedium and mind-bending beauty, spiked with brilliant throwaway images that more than make up for Kelly's heavy-handed hot-button pretensions. show more

This movie reminds me of a sight I once saw in Herford Texas. In a feed lot there was this huge heap of dung on which was standing majestically a cow. Remove the cow and you have the humor value of this movie and the smell. I spent money on this pile, please don't let this happen to you.

Southland Tales, while offering an intriguing vision of the future, remains frustratingly incoherent and unpolished.

I actually worked on the film- two 17 hour days at the Skirball ( or was it "screwball, as in 'comedy' ) centerin L.A., playing a club-goer as a BG actor. Around 300 of usspent two consecutive nights in a mock club-set-in-a-Zeppelin floating over L.A. Kelley is a cool guy with a great imagination;he just needs to submit his ideas to the classic scriptwriting format: 3 act structure, character arc, protagonist/antagonist,-that never fails to yield results when great ideas are plugged into it. It's all part of growing up, something that if Kelley isever challenged to do, will produce a great American film maker.
