Peasant-class parents Swami (Manoj Bajpai) and Radha (Juhi Chawla) dream of giving their precocious son an elite education. They sell their village home to move to Mumbai, where they enroll their son at a school for the wealthy. Radha learns she has kidney disease, prompting Swami to work extra hours to pay for the necessary surgery. Radha uses the money instead to buy a rocking chair. Soon widowed and broke, Swami sets out to fulfill Radha's last wish: that their son find success in America.
