Plot

According to this PBS documentary, most Americans weren't eager to start driving private automobiles when they first appeared in the early 1900s. In fact, streetcars were providing a highly popular, economical, and environmentally friendly form of transportation then. This film looks at how entrepreneurs like General Motors' president Alfred Sloan helped change people's minds with highly persuasive public relations campaigns. Segments also note how many modern cities are now choosing mass transit forms that are remarkably similar to yesterday's streetcars.
