Vowing not to die in a nursing home, Abner Meecham (Hal Holbrook) leaves the facility and returns to his Tennessee farm. There, an unpleasant surprise awaits him: Abner's son has leased the property to ne'er-do-well Lonzo Choat (Raymond McKinnon) and his boorish family. Director Scott Teems' film is as quiet as untilled soil -- not always a good thing -- but Holbrook has a handle on where to dig. show more

A moving if too-leisurely paced effort that benefits immeasurably from the superb performance by its 84-year-old star. show more

Watching Holbrook, I was reminded again of how steady and valuable this man has been throughout his career. show more

This is a great movie full of pathos and the inherit sadness of aging and the human condition. I could not recommend it more.

Absolutely depressing! Husband & I, both "senior citizens," left theatre in a cloud of despondency. Yikes, what a miserable way to spend a Friday evening. Albeit that Hal Holbrook is an accomplished actor & he played the character beautifully, we greatly regretted squirming through 2 hours of this film.
