Foster is electrifying as ego and id clash and the movie fires up with genuine provocation. show more

    Ruthe Stein San Francisco Chronicle

Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard are incredibly compelling and hold your attention despite Jordan's deliberately slow pacing. show more

If only The Brave One had captured more of the complex nature of the fear and paranoia plaguing society since 9/11. Instead, it is a well-made but predictable take on the revenge fantasy thriller, with a female twist. show more

    Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal

The drama is repetitive rather than resonant, an over-calculated, under-ventilated studio production -- even paranoid thrillers need to breathe -- whose plot machinery grinds grim and coarse. show more

    Carrie Rickey Philadelphia Inquirer

At the film's inconclusive conclusion, the filmmakers strand Erica and Sean in the moral twilight. show more

Jack Mathews New York Daily News

Not enough to overcome the proven axiom that although you can make a bad movie from a good script, you can't make a good one from a bad one. show more

    Michael Rechtshaffen The Hollywood Reporter

A vigilante drama boasting a powerful Jodie Foster performance and carefully weighted direction by Neil Jordan. show more

    Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times

Where did Hollywood get the conviction that audiences demand an ending that lets them off the hook? Foster doesn't let herself off the hook in The Brave One, and we should be as brave as she is. show more

Not since "The Crying Game" has Jordan crafted as compelling a motion picture. show more

An intense New York-set thriller that manages to be both commercial and contemplative, kick-ass and quietly, disturbingly insinuating. show more

As usual, Jodie Foster's performance was nothing short of astonishing. She commands the screen as very few can -- or ever will. Brilliantly acted, there is nobody I can think of who could have played this role as convincingly and perfectly as Jodie Foster...

"The Brave One" seems to begin as a good Jodie Foster movie, a good performance goes to great after awhile, but you can see the predictable outcome of all these type moves, then the last 20 minutes the predictable plot goes wild and the ending will put you on the edge of your seats. 5 stars!

I was captivated from beginning to end. The initial attack on Ms. Foster's character caused me to squirm and cringe in my seat! In "The Brave One", Ms. Foster delivers an intensely realistic depiction of post traumatic stress and subsequent vengeance, comparable only to Charles Bronson's portrayal of Paul Kersey in the "Death Wish" saga. I look forward to seeing it again!
