Visually stunning - but weak in continuity. I'm not sure whether to blame it on the scriptwriting or the editing - but it feel like there are many large gaps where the story just skips and you wonder if you missed something somehow. That also results in poor character development - no momentum in building characters (or perhaps just too much editing). I didn't feel any chemistry between the 2

The two weaknesses of this film were Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, who is a one-tune actor and is still apparently playing Henry the 8th...(seriously overacted many of the personal scenes)...and the cutting of the film, the Chinese-Australian-German team leaving us often with plot confusions. A surprisingly delightful movie. Epic in proportion. Could have been the Chinese version of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt, except it was an Englishman leading a group of Chinese orphans.
