Visually stunning - but weak in continuity. I'm not sure whether to blame it on the scriptwriting or the editing - but it feel like there are many large gaps where the story just skips and you wonder if you missed something somehow. That also results in poor character development - no momentum in building characters (or perhaps just too much editing). I didn't feel any chemistry between the 2 main players.

The two weaknesses of this film were Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, who is a one-tune actor and is still apparently playing Henry the 8th...(seriously overacted many of the personal scenes)...and the cutting of the film, the Chinese-Australian-German team leaving us often with plot confusions. However, the action, the handling of the horrible destruction in Nanking, the Chinese countryside, the journey over the mountains and the amazing scenes of the Silk Road were magnificent. And who wouldn't see any movie with Chow Yun-Fat in it?

A surprisingly delightful movie. Epic in proportion. Could have been the Chinese version of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt, except it was an Englishman leading a group of Chinese orphans.
