Being an extra on this film gave me more insight than i ever expected. The story of Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund is common knowledge in the city of Lowell, Ma. But the story that is being told here goes into great detail on these 2 champions. Christian Bale lost appx. 35 LBS for this role as Dicky Eklund, a great boxer in his prime destroyed by drugs and crime. And his rise to be a trainer for his half brother Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg). Mark trained for 1 year for this role to get him into boxing shape. This film is a project that he takes on a personal level. A large part of the film is being made within the city of Lowell with the rest being done in the studio. Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund are local heroes and icons. It was once mentioned at the opening of Sylvester Stallone's movie "Balboa" to Micky ward, "I played a champ in film, But you lived it for real". These words ring true to all that have been to the fights and have known these men and their families over the years.
