The film is unusual in that it is a co-production with the Chinese. Whatever difficulties this imposed on the Western filmmakers, the reward is a period film that feel authentic to its time and place. show more

If The Painted Veil ultimately lacks some of the novelty and ambition of the year's best pictures, it still ranks as one of 2006's quiet gems. show more

The Chinese locations ache with beauty. And when Watts and Norton focus, intently, on Maugham's often dazzlingly vindictive characters, The Painted Veil really does feel like a story worth filming a third time. show more

Norton isn't the first guy who comes to mind when you think ''period piece,'' but he's starred in two such films this year (in addition to The Painted Veil, he stars in "The Illusionist"), and he is terrific in both. show more

Never really heard of this film. Turns out that it is one of the best films I have seen in many years. Being very familiar with China and the area where this was filmed, added to my enjoyment. The failure of the marketing people and Warner Studio is a complete shame as this film could have and should have won many awards !

I totally agree with JushiBuruBeri. This movie has become one of my favorites and I'm a huge movie buff. I can and have watched this movie over and over. What shocks me is why The Painted Veil was never nominated for any awards! The acting, directing, cinematography, and the story line are so far above many of the movies we see get nominations every year that it truly boggles the mind that this movie was overlooked. I highly recommend watching The Painted Veil. You won't regret it for a minute.

This movie has become one of my all-time favorites. Aside from the gorgeous cinematography, the plot is excellent. I love the character development. Not only can you see each character's growth, but the relationship dynamics are clear and excellent. I have watched this movie over and over again, picking up more details each time. The music is perfect for the film. Ed Norton did an increadible job. I respect his work more and more every time he does something new.
