It's hard to deny that The Rite is guilty of sins against its audience. show more

Mr. Hopkins gives the production what he was hired for. Whenever you wonder how much longer he can trade on Hannibal Lecter's special zest, the same answer comes up-a lot. show more

As Hopkins himself goes wild-eyed and FX-ed with popping veins, The Rite gives up on asking us to take it seriously. show more

Terminally silly, even more so for being "inspired by actual events." show more

The Rite becomes more ludicrous as it goes along, with more than a few lines of dialogue from Michael Petroni's over-the-top screenplay eliciting unintended titters. show more

I admire The Rite because while it delivers what I suppose should be called horror, it is atmospheric, its cinematography is eerie and evocative, and the actors enrich it. show more

Two stars only because of Anthony Hopkins. It really deserves no stars at all for being a blatant piece of Catholic propaganda. The rubbish at the end of the movie when they do their little follow-up on the where-a-bouts and goings-on in the lives of the main characters is pathetic; the attempt to give the movie some sort of credibility. If you\'re looking for a bit of evil to brighten up your day, try Silence of the Lambs or listen to Dio - Holy Diver: both of those options are much more fulfilling. Shemhamphorasch

Decent flick. It will get lost in the sand of times, but definitely worth renting.

Utterly boring and lacking of anything slightly exciting. Great performance by Sir Anthony Hopkins as always but not even he could save this , what truly is an interesting and exciting script, from the lazy and talentless directing of this film. Don\'t bother with this one.

Write your review here...Demons Walk Among Us. In 1973 William Friedkin’s The Exorcist invaded the dreams of millions; in 2005 Scott Derrickson revealed the true story of the possession of 19 – year- old Emily Rose in The Exorcism of Emily Rose. In the summer of 2010 Daniel Stamm haunted theaters with the documentary of a real life exorcism in The Last Exorcism. This winter prepare to be haunted again in Mikael Hafstrom’s horror/thriller The Rite, inspired by true events about an American priest in the making who travels to Italy to study at an exorcism school. Oscar award winner Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal) plays the elderly Father Lucas Trevant, an experienced exorcist who mentors young Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue, in his first staring role), a potential priest with a skeptical belief in demons and devils and possesses an absence of faith. Through the guidance, understanding, and close encounters in demonic possession that Kovak obtains from his mentor, he begins to see a world consumed by evil and darkness, a world that encompasses us every day, a world in that we live in. This film is rated PG-13 for disturbing thematic material, violence, frightening images, and language including sexual references, but what is failed to be revealed is that this film can also be considered a soft-core comedy. There are a few moments of comic relief that take place. During one of the first serious and climatic scenes an unexpected laugh will overcome you, followed by an “umm did that really just happen in a thriller?” Comic relief can be a good thing, but there are times in this “allegedly” serious true story film that the humor ruins the chilling and hair raising suspense. All in all, this film will have you engrossed early on and keep you thinking “did this really happen?” The supernatural sound effects will make you jump in your seat while the spooky special effects and makeup used for the demonic possession is as realistic as it can get. The beautiful landscape shots of Italy will ruse you into planning your spring break there, while the contrasting dark and horrific shots of Italy will cause you to keep a safe distance. The storyline is quite believable, unlike the Hollywood version of The Exorcist; there is no full 360 head spin or pea soup projectile vomiting. As of November 2010, the Roman Catholic Bishops convened due to the growing demand for exorcisms. “The Devil is a real and constant force,” one bishop said ‘… we have to be prepared” (New York Times Nov 13, 2010). When you walk out of the theater you won’t be able to tell yourself

I was riveted throughout the movie, and enjoyed screaming 3 times from fear. Not really into the religious theme movies but this one was too good. Loved every minute of it
