Two stars only because of Anthony Hopkins. It really deserves no stars at all for being a blatant piece of Catholic propaganda. Utterly boring and lacking of anything slightly exciting. Great performance by Sir Anthony Hopkins as always but not even he could save this , what truly is an interesting and exciting script, from the lazy and talentless directing of this film. Don't bother with this one.

For all the hellfire histrionics and well-timed jump scares, there is actual, admirable intellect behind The Rite. Full Review

Hafstrom creates a nice, creepy vibe, especially for the first part of the movie, which has a menacing atmosphere. Too bad he doesn't sustain it. Full Review

The Rite becomes more ludicrous as it goes along, with more than a few lines of dialogue from Michael Petroni's over-the-top screenplay eliciting unintended titters. Full Review

Variety
While marred by cheap tricks and borderline camp, picture comes off as a largely low-key, intelligent effort. Full Review
