A literary offering has succeeded when it makes me think, triggers memories of personal experience, or causes me to question myself and the world around me. Bees did that for me. I recalled my experiences of conflicts, stereotypes and misinformation between the races. The story portrays these aspects then one more thing the ability of the person to succumb, overcome or persevere in spite of or because of discrimination or abuse. Dsdelco thank you for your reply. You are right. Your words helped to remember one of my first jobs as a teacher assistant. There were children there (black and white) from the poorest of families. I worked with a wonderful teacher who refused to believe that the children were throwaways. We were rewarded as letters came from some of those children who said, thank you. They let us know that they were the first to graduate from high school and some were accepted to college. Some of the white children had never seen a black person before meeting me, told me that they hated blacks, then were surprised when they learned that I was a black person. Exposed to new experiences, given time to think on their own, they grew. And so did I. Great kids, every one.

Wow! I just saw this film today. I read the book a few weeks ago, and loved it. During most of the film, I felt like crying. There was so much pain, but that is what the story is about. Characters who find themselves in deeply painful situations, and make their way to a healing family. The film was perfectly cast. Paul Bettany was brilliant as TR. He completely became that character. Bravo!! The characters were not as fully developed as I would like, but the telling of the story did seem to be as it would be told by the fourteen year old Lilly. Dakota F is brilliant, Queen Latifah was the perfect August. The healing message of the film was powerful. Love the music!!!

well said..however... its one thing if the parents are of no educational help its another when speaking of poor educational system.. its hard to say whether you can blame a "system"-broad word. Because, my friend is a teacher in a school for very poor children in a very poor area and he said the asian kids, whether they came from a bad family or not, had the highest scores in the school. Could it just be genetically they are inclined to be smarter-who knows(sometimes i wonder) or that they utilize the education handed to them and their values are different. I dont know..its something people are going to have alot of different opinions on. And there are facts and their are opinions..you have to sort out which is which. All i know is that this is a hard life to live for anyone especially today...some have it worse then others... you make the most of the life given to you....and hope for the best! Amen!

It was ok for me, you see so much racist going on even this day and time. It was just to much for me. Due the fact that black's was treated so bad in those days. White people think that black women just belong in the kitchen or on there backs or cleaning behind there nasty mess. I feel that movies of this type sould show how we as black women have to work four times as hard to get any were in life and that we are not dum. We still have to fight every day of our life, because we are look down on for the color of our skin color. It just brother me that this send a message to white poeple that it was ok for them to treat us as black people the way they did. And that it ok to do it again.

it was okay, seemed like something was missing. actress sophie okonedo was battling depression, and they should've showed that in more detail...like her going to psychiatrists, taking medicines, it just jumped to the final scene with her. with alicia keys, we should've seen the wedding at least.
