When we talk about cinema, we usually talk about how the filmmaker guides us through the journey overall, and through each image he or she presents. We discuss the movements, the lights and the focus, and how that evokes moods and reactions in us, the...
Some 300 movies came out in 2007, and we managed to see almost every one that mattered (sorry, 'Who's Your Caddy?'). Hollywood had a good year, despite all those three-quel let-downs. We battled like Spartans (but with fewer casualties) to hammer out this...
Spoiler Warning: This article touches upon the ending of 'The Social Network' and 'Citizen Kane.' Cinematical's very own Erik Davis began his review of 'The Social Network' by predicting that 'They'll call it a film that defines a generation,' and if the...
Welcome to Framed, a column at Cinematical that celebrates the artistry of cinema -- one frame at a time. When Paul Thomas Anderson sent production designer and art director Jack Fisk a script for his 2007 feature, There Will Be Blood, he included a...

Unquestionably this has become one of my favorite films of all-time, and probably that is the only American film I can say this about from the past 5 years. Every shot is drenched in visual poetry. ... The production design in stellar. The cinematography is mind-bending. Daniel-Day Lewis gives one of the great performances of all time and Johnny Greenwood delivers one of the best scores ever (unsurprisingly as Radiohead is one of the best bands ever. If you need something fast-moving and don\'t like to think too much go elsewhere. This is not ******************** art. There\'s a big difference. Full Review
I give There Must Be Blood 5 stars for nothing else than the closing violin solo. What a smashing idea to pair great credits music with the cinematic plot kernel of Upton Sinclair's book "Oil&q... uot;. The greedy price of commodity oil today and the world's need to become free of it, was a dark mirror image to the early greed for oil of this film. Long, yes. Try reading some Upton Sinclair, fascinating. and the reade can take it a chapter at a time. Day Lewis earned his Oscar, and the rest of the csting was convincing, The music in the filmed story was simply ok, not good, not bad. The theme of the film story is frightening. With the tribute Altman I reconsidered its worth to be a 5 star undertaking. Full Review
