I have been long finding who I feel would be comparable in acting skills to Anna Magnani and Sophia Loren. After several decades, I found her in Giovanna Mezzogiorno! Brava!

Superb in all departments - acting, direction, cinematography, settings, costumes, pacing, etc.. The selection of musical compositions were well chosen to accent the mood of the scenes. The segment from the opera Akhnaten, by Philip Glass, was particularly moving.

Beautifully acted and shot ...often painful to watch in its heavier moments ... and a bit long ... For the latter reasons I left the theater somewhat dissatisfied ... but I must say that images and impressions of the characters remained in my thoughts for several days AFTER - Great films stay with you like that ...

It's a thrilling, at times brilliant piece of staging that never forgets the emotional pull of either the tragic personal tale or the ramifications of history. Full Review

There is one problem for non-Italian audiences. Aiming at domestic viewers, Bellocchio assumes historical knowledge most Americans, including me, probably don't have. There are a number of hints that Dalser was shunted aside because she was ethnically German, as well as a scene where poor Germans are being burned out of their homes. Full Review

Though Ida's life would become a torturous hell spent locked away in an insane asylum, the legacy left by her letters has made for an intense and intriguing, if at times uneven, film with Italian director Marco Bellocchio wringing every drop of emotion out of his actors and his audience before it is over. Vincere is Ida's story, but it says as much about fascist Italy and its ruler as it does about the central character. Full Review
