Violin of M'sieur Synopsis & Summary

Synopsis

The two-reel fantasy Violin of M'Sieur was part of a triple feature released by Vitagraph during the week of June 19, 1914 (the other films in this trilogy were Shadows of the Past and Mr. Bingles' Melodrama). Set during the Franco-Prussian war, the film stars Clara Kimball Young as Yvonne, the daughter of French musician Pere Gerome (Etienne Girardot). When a Prussian officer takes liberties with Yvonne, Gerome smashes his violin over the officer's head, earning himself a stiff jail sentence. Five long years pass before Pere Gerome is reunited with Yvonne, who in the interim has become the wife of Jean (played by Ms. Young's real-life husband, James Young, who also directed the film). The drama of the film rests in the pathos of Papa Gerome's efforts to patch his tattered household back together. - Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
