More in the tone of the big screen "Friday Night Lights" than "Rudy" or "The Blind Side," it succeeds as mainstream entertainment without relying on a conventional storybook framework. show more

The script depends entirely too much on a succession of reporters, announcers, and spectators to provide context and detail in clunky, implausible dialogue. show more

“Hoosiers” this ain’t. The redemptive final game has some nice plays and bone-crunching sound effects, but no grit. Ultimately, it’s a ho-hum, bromide-filled production undeserving of a victory dance. show more

I really wanted to like this movie, as I am a huge fan of "Friday Night Lights" a few years ago. That movie was awesome! Even if you saw it in the theater at the time (possibly dragged there by a football super fan) or have watched it on TV since, it was a movie that did not require you be a football expert. It was about people, goals, passions and of course...football! "When The Game Stands Tall" is not that movie. It's slow, disconnected but most of all...boring! You leave not caring about any particular character n the movie or anything they did. I would give this a film a 3/10.

If you are sports fan and appreciate the spiritual nature of athletics, this movie is a touchdown. I love that most of the critics didn't appreciate it for what it is; a story filled with fundamental life lessons, often overlooked and under appreciated in today's fast paced, spontaneous world. If you are not a sports fan but appreciate being reminded of what is important in life, it is also a good watch. Is it the best movie I've ever seen? no. However, I can only count about 5 to 7 of those over the last 30 years anyway. Enjoy !!
