Winter's Tale is preposterous twaddle. show more

    Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle

It is partly a failure, but mostly it succeeds, and the film's aspiration is so enormous that that's enough for a moving experience. show more

    Claudia Puig USA Today

Lurching back and forth through time, Winter's Tale tries to blend the supernatural and the sentimental, with a synchronous nod to elements of New York history. But this would-be magical romance flounders, hitting only dissonant chords. show more

Mr. Goldsman, a first-time director though a veteran screenwriter, has been done in by the source material. Either he climbed aboard a horse that was too much for him, or the universe gave him a bum steer. show more

Elizabeth Weitzman New York Daily News

The whole movie hinges on the allegedly miraculous romance between Beverly and Peter, but Goldsman’s leads are distractingly mismatched and lack even a spark of chemistry. show more

    Todd McCarthy The Hollywood Reporter

Aspiring transcendent love stories don't come much more claptrappy and unconvincing than Winter's Tale. show more

Not every book should be made into a film and, as appears to be the case with Winter’s Tale, not every book can be (especially this one). show more

    Michael Phillips Chicago Tribune

Despite the actors, who at least get some swell clothes to wear, Winter's Tale is a bit of a soul-crusher itself. show more

    Connie Ogle Miami Herald

Unfortunately there’s far too little magic in this clumsy attempt to marry fantasy and realism; the film doesn’t have the grace or imagination to bridge the gaps between the two. show more

Goldsman takes Helprin’s book — a work overflowing with events, ideas, characters, passions — and pounds away at it until all that’s left is mush. show more

This was the worst piece of CRAPOLA to come out of Hollywierd . Such a great cast on a script that was just plain silly and STUPID. SAVE YOUR BRAIN and your $$$$$$$$$$$.

I thought the movie was ok. Thought the acting was pretty good. Wonder if I would have liked the movie as much had I of read the book first. I know seeing a movie after reading a book sometime is disappointing as it isn't as you envisioned it. Maybe that's why such a low score w/ the critics.

This was one of the worst movies I've seen. The critics actually have this one right. After it ended everyone just sat there looking at each other and saying......was that it? As we were walking out of the theater all we could hear was people complaining how bad it was. Don't waste your money

My wife and I really enjoyed this fanciful and unusual love story. I think the movie was well acted and an enjoyable experience. I don't know what the problem was with the critics, but I pretty much ignore what they say anyway.

It was morality tale. Good vs. evil. A cross between a Grimm\'s Fairy Tale and a Hans Christian Anderson story. Colin Farrell and newcomer Jessica Findlay had great chemistry. Russell Crowe was perfect as the hulking personification of eternal evil. And, of course, there was a twist at the end.

The last time I observed an audience sit intently watching a love story like this, was Titanic. When Winters Tale ended, the entire audience sat in silence for a good five minutes, with the exception of tears. People were moved, couples walked out arms around each. Splendly magical!!!

I don\'t know what movie the critics watched but this is one of the best movies I\'ve seen in a while. Very romantic. The chemistry was great. Even I got a little emotional at the end and that\'s not me.

Was okay, but required a leap of faith to believe the goings on, even as a fantasy tale. Was hard to understand with all the scenes jumping around over a 100-year period, along with the whispering and foreign accents that made me want to shout \"speak up!!\"
