I'm surprised at the reviews saying this is a boring movie. Yes, it's long, but for fans of true crime cases, it's a treat. I found it gripping and suspenseful. The acting was great, especially Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. While Jake Gylenhall did project the innocence of Robert Graysmith, I found it puzzling, that the character didn't seem to age at all during the 1983 scene, the orange VW Rabbit aged more than he did. I loved the feel of the movie and the great attention to detail to give it the feel of that time in history. (Although I didn't think the blue and yellow color California license plates didn't come out until the late 70's, they were in a scene from 1973) I enjoyed this movie throughly and would highly reccommend it.

Boring, too long, killer was inept, theater was full of old people who probably remember the actual case. Thought about snatching one's oxygen just to stay awake. Rent it. maybe.

...This review is to all the people who say the movie was too slowpaced and boring. Well, you should have read and trusted these reviews. It's true it is slow paced and meant for those people who love character and plot development in movies. If you require blood, guts, action, stupid sight gags or simple dialogue this movie is not for you. If you want to see an excellently crafted, thoughtful, and intense movie that makes you think than by all means go see this. The movie is very long but you hate to leave to go to the bathroom because you just know there will be something important missed. I just wish there were an intermission.

This was a real interesting movie, and I liked it, but it is alittle long and alittle slow. It is much more about the investigating of the crime than it is about seeing the crime. Don't expect fireworks!

I'm a fan of horror movies, and although I'm sure this movie is more thriller than blood and guts, Jake G. is too pretty boy for this, they need someone more cool and edgy...

Ironically, The San Francisco Chronicle's review above is on the money. The S.F.C. plays an important role in the movie so I think you should read this review and trust me, everything it says is so true. It plays out like a documentary in all the historical facts that are splayed out before the viewer, but it just doesn't work as a dramatic story. It's a big bore. Also check out the L.A. Times review, a little kinder, and I can agree with what they're saying too. The top 5 reviews from papers above, those guys are on drugs, or they are getting paid off by the studio to write something so glowing. The L.A. times had a very interesting point, with the horrors that affect our modern day with Columbine and McDonald's shootings and Terrorist bombs, maybe a movie about a couple of simple killings is just not interesting enough.

this is NOT a good film. it drags, too much dialogue, too much exposition, not enough real film-making here. too many facts being thrown out of the mouths of the actors, and worse yet constant titles on the screen, "2 days later" "3 weeks later" "4 months later" "2 1/2 years later" This is something a good film does not need. So what if this story is based on "real events", make a movie and discard all the technical chronology and get your viewers on the edge of their seat. Also, you don't know if you're supposed to pay attention to those titles, do they mean something? The facts and figures and story never pays off to a satisfying result. The ending is sooooo completely lame. The actors are all fine, especially Robert Downey and Mark Ruffalo, Jake is also fine, but I NEVER dose in a movie and i started to dose a couple times having to catch myself. This film is the worst adaptation of a book ever. Please spare yourself the waste of time and don't even rent it on video. Go see something fresh and exciting like Children of Men or Notes on a Scandal.

Definately a movie that has to be watched on DVD. You need a note book to write down everything so you can go back and figure out "what or who" they are talking about??? After trying to listen and follow intently I was discouraged and said the hell with it. Read the book first so you can follow along with this boring and overdone movie.

Does anyone have an attention span anymore? Yes, this is a long movie, but the story is compelling and the acting is first-rate. I did not see anyone dozing off or leaving the theater. If you are tired, don't go to a 3-hour movie. If you want special effects go see GhostRider or some such drivel. This is an adult movie for adults who can follow a storyline. I agree with someone who said it was the best movie since The Departed. I would sit through it again, and am now planning on reading the book.
