Summer 2009 Chick Flicks
Call them romantic comedies, call them tearjerkers, call them nuanced narratives of love, emotion and loss -- we're calling 'em chick flicks.
Whether you're looking for a break from action movies or just need a good laugh (or cry), this summer's "counter-programming" includes Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds sparring, Meryl Streep and Amy Adams cooking, Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams time-traveling, and the director of 'The Notebook' aiming squarely for our heartstrings once again (curse him). And if any of you menfolk are intrigued by this summer's lineup ... hey, there's no shame in that.

'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past'
Opening: May 1
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Michael Douglas
What It's About: McConaughey is a playboy whose girl-crazy ways come back to haunt him -- literally -- at his baby bro's wedding. Garner is the one that got away; from what we can tell by the trailer, the two were "meant to be" since they were kids, when he was a swinger of an entirely different sort (i.e., on the swingset). Awww. McConaughey and Garner are so likable, we want to fall in love with them as a movie couple.

'Management'
Opening: May 15
Starring: Jennifer Aniston, Steve Zahn, Woody Harrelson
What It's About: The summer's most unlikely couple shoots for sparks in this long-delayed rom-com. A man-child (Zahn) who's never strayed too far from his parents' Arizona motel (that he also manages) falls madly in love with a businesswoman guest (Aniston). Numerous "butt-touching" jokes ensue.

'My Life in Ruins'
Opening: June 5
Starring: Nia Vardalos, Richard Dreyfuss, Rachel Dratch
What It's About: Sort of like 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' meets 'How Stella Got Her Groove Back,' 'Ruins' follows Georgia, a woman on a mission to find a mission in life. She takes a gig showing tourists the treasures around Greece, where her family is from, and finds her own way somewhere along the adventure.

'The Proposal'
Opening: June 12
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen
What It's About: Sandra Bullock as a high-powered beyotch who bullies Ryan Reynolds, her harried and handsome man-sistant, to marry her for the green card? Book our tickets, we love it already! Add the always delightful Betty White as Reynolds' plucky grandma, and we swear, we're going to go right now and line up at the theater. This is a 'Proposal' we have no intention of saying no to.

'My Sister's Keeper'
Opening: June 26
Starring: Cameron Diaz, Alec Baldwin, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vassilieva, Joan Cusack
What It's About: Nick Cassavetes ('The Notebook') brings another best-selling tearjerker -- Jodi Picoult's controversial novel, 'My Sister's Keeper' -- to the big screen. Breslin plays Anna, who was conceived as a genetic match for her leukemia-stricken sister. Thirteen years later, she is overcome by the nature of her existence and connection to her dying sister (Vassilieva). Driven to seek legal emancipation from her parents, Anna forms a unique bond with the lawyer (Baldwin) she has hired to represent her. Don't forget the tissues!

'The Ugly Truth'
Opening: July 24
Starring: Katherine Heigl, Gerard Butler, Cheryl Hines
What It's About: Relationship-challenged Abby (Heigl) has the perfect job as a morning show producer, but has yet to meet the perfect man. When she gets paired with her idea of the most imperfect man at work (Butler), she gets an in-your-face lesson on the reality of love. Oh, no -- do you think these two will fall head-over-hills after some cute sparring? Because that never happens in rom-coms.

'Julie & Julia'
Opening: Aug. 7
Starring: Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Stanley Tucci
What It's About: Blogger Julie Powell was on a mission: to make every recipe in Julia Childs' 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking' over the course of one year. The resulting memoir is now a movie, based on both Powell's book and Julia Childs' autobiography of living in France. Romantic comedy guru Nora Ephron directs, Adams plays Powell, Streep plays Childs ... and we play the viewers salivating over these two screen goddesses, teaming up for a movie made in foodie-cinematic heaven.

'The Time Traveler's Wife'
Opening: Aug. 14
Starring: Eric Bana, Rachel McAdams
What It's About: The Audrey Niffenegger novel hits the big screen in this adaptation starring Bana as the time-traveling Henry and McAdams as Clare, who meets the adult Henry when she's still a girl and eventually becomes his wife. The book won over readers everywhere with its poignant and unusual love story, so we've got high expectations for the movie already ... and staring at Bana and McAdams for two hours is just an added bonus.

Starring: Vanessa Hudgens, Alyson Michalka, Gaelen Connell
What It's About: Fellow Disney Channel stars Hudgens and Michalka put their talents together for this teen romantic comedy, in which popular girl Charlotte (Michalka) transforms the life of the new kid in town (Connell) when she asks him to manage her band. Sparks fly between him and the cute lead singer (Hudgens) as they prepare to challenge Charlotte's ex in an epic battle of the bands. For those of you no longer in high school, your interest may be piqued by the movie's two grown-ups: Lisa Kudrow and David Bowie.
