SonyPicturesClassics co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard have re-upped for an additional five years with parent company Sony Pictures Entertainment. The indie shingle, formed in 1991, has been pivotal in extending the reach of independent US and foreign-language films beyond New York and L.A and has been instrumental in increasing the exposure and acceptance of foreign-language films in the United States.
One of the trademarks of SPC over the years has been their ability to form relationships with filmmakers and distribute several of their films, including Zhang Yimou with 6 films, Pedro Almodovar and MerchantIvory with 5 and Louis Malle and John Sayles with four apiece. The SPC team has won 19 Oscars and received 77 nominations, including two Best Picture nods (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Howard's End).
The company will release Hector Babenco's latest film, Carandiru, tomorrow. Babenco's previous films include Ironweed and Kiss of the Spider Woman.
