According to Daily Variety, famed German director Werner Herzog is either going to
direct or star in, a film set around an international poker tournament with Ben Affleck, David
Schwimmer, William H. Macy and Richard Kind starring. Herzog's credit is not
clear because the trade paper's headline reads, in part "Affleck, Schwimmer to star; Herzog to direct" but the body of
the piece lists Herzog (Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Fitzcarraldo) as a star. The piece goes on to list
Zak Penn (Incident at Loch Ness) as director. Penn is quoted in the piece as being inspired
by Christopher Guest's mockumentaries (Best in Show, Waiting For Guffman) and
Larry David's HBO series, Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Penn has, according to variety, played poker every week since high school and has played with each cast member save for Macy, who reportedly doesn't gamble. The film is being financed to the tune of $10 million by Insomnia Entertainment, a company launched last fall set up to make films promoting casino gambling. principles in the company include Station Casino chairman Frank Fertitta and vice chairman Lorenzo Fertitta, along with Golden Nugget owners Tim Poster and Tom Breitling. The film is set to be produced by Insonia's fifth partner Trent Othick along with Matt Bierman and Gary Marcus.
