In sizing up the situation in Vietnam, president Lyndon Johnson once famously said: "The ultimate victory will depend on the hearts and minds of the people." Clearly, we didn't win the hears and minds of the Vietnamese people. Filmmaker Peter Davis took part of that statement for the title of his 1974 Oscar®-winning documentary, Hearts and Minds. From October 22nd through November 4th, the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring, Maryland will screen Davis' film and on Saturday, October 16th, SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival will host a special advance screening of Hearts and Minds with an appearance by director Davis. Post-screening, Davis will be joined by Bobby Muller, president of the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. As a wounded Vietnam War veteran, Muller appeared in the film. An audience Q&A will follow.
Anyone concerned with our failed attempts to win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people should see this film.
