Ed's Note: Before you get on me for writing about a play in an indie film blog, Woody Allen is responsible for many legenday indie films and Michael McKean has been a creative force in and behind several others. So there. -MR
Indie film fixture Michael McKean is set to star in legendary
filmmaker Woody Allen's latest play, A Second Hand Memory. The Off-Broadway production,
currently in rehearsals, begins previews at New York's Atlantic Theater Company on November 3rd with
opening night set for November 22nd. The ensemble production also stars Kate Blumberg (The Atlantic
Theater Company's Writer's Block, also dir. by Allen), Dominic Chianese (The
Sopranos), Beth Fowler (Broadway's The Boy From Oz), Nicky Katt (TV's
Boston Public), Erica Leershen (Hollywood Ending), and Elizabeth
Marvel (Off-Broadway's Hedda Gabbler) and is scheduled to run through January 16th, 2005.
McKean is a frequent collaborator with filmmaker/actor Christopher Guest and starred in the latter's Best in Show and A Mightly Wind and co-wrote the original music (along with Guest and Harry Shearer) for Guest's Waiting for Guffman. Of course McKean, Guest and Shearer rose to movie stardom as David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel and Derek Smalls in Carl Reiner's brilliant mocumentary This Is Spinal Tap. The trio also wrote that film, along with Reiner. Try walking through an airport metal detector with a foil-wrapped zucchini in your trousers these days and see who laughs!
