Lions Gate Films indie horror release Saw pocketed a hefty $17 million plus over its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. That translates to a strong per theater average of more than $7,500. That stellar take, however, was not enough to overtake Sony's horror pic The Grudge, which, in its second weekend, pulled in over $22 million on 1,000 more screens than Saw. The Lions Gate pic screened at this year's Sundance Film Festival and stars Carey Elwes and Danny Glover and Monica Potter, among others. Interestingly, the two scare pics received identical metascores of 43 (out of a perfect 100) on metacritic. In second place was Universal's Ray Charles biopic, Ray, a film being touted as a serious Oscar® contender, for what it's worth.
