A.O. Scott's (emminently reasonable) misgivings aside, there's no arguing that Alexander Payne's Sideways is 2004's most widely praised film. Up for seven Golden Globes (more nominations than any other film), and the winner of four major New York Film Critics Circle awards, it's the safest bet for a Best Picture nomination in a very competitive year.
Catch a special screening of the film this Saturday night, sponsored by the American Museum of the Moving
Image, at the Directors Guild Theater, 110 West 57th Street in Manhattan. Three-quarters of the cast
(Thomas Haden Church, Paul Giamatti, and Virginia Madsen) will
participate in a discussion immediately following the screening.
