This week finds Ricky Gervais, creator and star of BBC America's Golden Globe-winning cult hit The Office, signing on to at least three very major projects. After meeting several times with Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, Gervais agreed to write and guest-voice an episode of the animated series, to air sometime in 2006. Reuters reports that he's also tapped fellow British superstars-with-indie-cred Jude Law and Kate Winslet to star in his follow-up to The Office, a sitcom about Hollywood bit players to be called Extras. And, last but certainly not least, he'll co-star opposite sometime indie-slummer Tom Cruise in J.J. Abrams'Mission: Impossible 3. U.K. movie news site Monsters and Critics quotes Gervais as saying that when it comes to selecting projects, "I'm interested in doing something I am proud of. Money gives me the creeps." That worldview should make for interesting on-set dialogue with Cruise, who was named by Forbes magazine as the entertainment industry's 12th highest paid celebrity of 2004.
