What follows is a not-quite minute-by-minute play-by-play of the Golden Globes telecast. Check back
for the big awards later in the program; I'll probably only gloss over the TV awards.
Renee Zellweger and unflattering up-do present the first award, for Best Supporting Actor, to Clive Owen for Closer. It goes off without a hitch, though seems to be a bit of a shock, as Morgan Freeman got the loudest cheer when his name was called. Owen thanked his co-stars and Mike Nichols. Blah blah.
Best Supporting Actress, presented by Tim Robbins. Natalie Portman wins, again for Closer. And her belt doesn't fit! This is a surprise on both counts, as Virginia Madsen was the favorite, and Natalie Portman is supposed to be Zac Posen's muse. In her very giggly "acceptance speech," Portman calls Mike Nichols both "daddy" and "a rockstar". She is definitely already drunk.
Commercial break. Karina flips through take-out menus, cracks open a can of Schlitz. Wonders if she should go downstairs and pick up more beer, decides to wait for the next commercial.
