The London Film Critics Circle gave out their annual awards last night, and like most of the many
like events this season, there was no one dominant winner: Martin Scorsese was named Best Director for
helming The Aviator, whilst Alexander Payne's Sideways took home Best Picture
honors. There was, however, a big loser, as Clint Eastwood and his Million Dollar Baby went
home empty handed. Meanwhile, Imelda Staunton and Phil Davis won Best Actress and
Best Supporting Actor, respectively, for their work in Mike Leigh's Vera Drake, which also
took three prizes specific to British films. In what comes as a surprise to no one, Jamie Foxx was
named Best Actor for his performance in Ray.
The LFCC awards are seen as a precursor to the BAFTAs, Britain's version of the Oscars, which will be handed out this Sunday. For a full list of last night's winners, check out the Critic's Circle homepage.
