The following bit of "isn't that jumping the gun?" news comes from the BBC: Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes will be given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Directors Guild of Great Britain. Mendes, the husband of actress Kate Winslet, is 39 years old and has directed two films, Road to Perdition and the Oscar-sweeper American Beauty. "The guild likes the idea of being bold enough to recognise formidable achievement in a body of work, no matter the age of the individual, " read a statement from the DGGB, preempting the logical criticism of the decision. Mendes, who will join the ranks of Stanley Kubrick and John Schlesinger when he picks up the honor on March 20, issued the following response: "I've decided to treat it as a large bank loan that I can pay off in instalments over the next 30 years."
