Actor/Tribeca Film Festival patriarch Robert DeNiro is teaming up with American Express and to launch a short film contest with a grand prize of $50,000.

The shorts, which must be between two and seven minutes in length and are due no later than April 13, will be ranked by Amazon visitors, on a scale of one to five, to create a pool of five finalists. The top five films will screen at Tribeca Cinemas and in June one luck winner will be selected to recieve a $50,000 pre-paid American Express card for the purpose of financing future projects.

"The Tribeca Film Festival has always recognized the importance of short films, and we're excited about supporting the people who make them," said DeNiro, at a Tribeca Film Festival conference this afternoon. "The contest will undoubtedly help discover important new filmmakers."
