Reuters is reporting that Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. have signed on to star in Fur, director Stephen Shainberg's biopic on photographer Diane Arbus. Shainberg's last picture was 2002's Secretary; his screenwriter on that film, Erin Cressida Wilson, is funnelling Patricia Wilson's Diane Arbus: A Biography into the Fur script.
Previous reports suggested that actress Samantha Morton (an Oscar nominee for Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown) had already been cast in the role of Arbus; no word yet on what happened to that deal. Kidman's next project was to be Eucalyptus, co-starring Russell Crowe; that production was recently shut down, leaving the Austrailian actress suddenly available.
Arbus was known for her sometimes distrubing, always candid photographs of freaks, losers, and others on the fringe of American society (including Woman with a Veil on Fifth Avenue, NYC, 1968 - above). She committed suicide in 1971. Kidman won an Oscar for playing another suicidal artist, Virginia Wolff, in Stephen Daldry's The Hours.
