In an acceptance speech taped on the set of his new film, Jarhead, Sam Mendes professed to feel "undeserving" of the Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed upon him this weekend by the Director's Guild of Great Britain. "I feel the award is a bank loan, which I'll take out and pay back by the end of 20 years," said Mendes. "By then I'll feel more deserving." Jarhead, currently shooting in Mexico with Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx, is Mendes' third film; his first, American Beauty, won five Oscars in 1999. Mendes' next project is a film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Tony-winning musical, Sweeney Todd, now in pre-production and scheduled for release in 2006.
