The Last Picture Show director Peter Bogdanovich spoke at a huge protest in New York yesterday against the closing of the Plaza Hotel. The owners of the historic site plan to shut down for renovations at the end of this month; they plan to creat a new complex, which will include condos and luxury retail stores as well as hotel rooms. Bogdanovich joined about 1,000 demonstrators, some of whom stand to lose their jobs once the hotel revamps. Others, like Bogdanovich, were primarily motivated by the hotel's cultural history. "Neil Simon wrote Plaza Suite, not Plaza Condo, " Bogdanovich told the assembled mass. Despite the protests, as of this morning the hotel's owners plan to carry on with the renovations.
