The Guardian UK is reporting that Sony has registered patents on a series of devices that would allow moviegoers to experience the sensations of smell, touch and taste whilst watching a film. Their update on 1950s gimmick Smell-O-Vision (which itself was updated by John Waters as Odorama, via scratch-and-sniff) will employ "carefully directed ultrasound beams" to target the brain. According to the patent itself, "One of the advantages is that no invasive surgery is needed to assist a person, such as a blind person, to view live/recorded images."

I think this all sounds very creepy.
