The lesson was that if you wanted to be a true black artist, you had to reject the direction of 'the man', and look for inspiration in the everyday lives of the black community around you." Well, now son Mario has provided some historical context to the power of this film in directing, Baadasssss!, a feature depicting the struggle his father went through in putting together Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song in the 70s.
