180px-EShort-BlackDahlia.jpgAccording to the Hollywood Reporter, Universal has paid somewhere in the range of $10-15 million for distribution rights on Brian DePalma's adaptation of The Black Dahlia, which is currently in production. Anne Thompson is calling it "the first big North American sale at Cannes this year", which isn't really accurate; Universal vice chairman Marc Schmuger stopped by the film's Bulgaria set "en route to Cannes," and the deal was made. Based on James Ellroy's novel, the film tracks two cops (Josh Hartnett and Aaron Eckhart) obsessed with solving the murder of Elizabeth Short, a wannabe actress whose bisected body was found in an empty lot in January of 1947. Scarlett Johansson and Hilary Swank also star.
