Barb Dybwad over at our brother site Engadget has a look at an R2D2 made by the University of Pisa’s MediaLab. It's a functional prototype of R2D2, but slightly taller so that its camera eye can more easily interact with humans. It walks and beeps just like the R2D2 we know and love from the Star Wars movies. It comes equipped with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, and is programed to flee at the sight of a lightsaber. The robot actually is the resulting prototype of a research project that attempted to create a kind of slave or companion robot with a friendly interface. And, it was made on a budget of only 50,000 Euros. I'll take two.
