A French appeals court has upheld an earlier court's ruling that Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2004 film A Very Long Engagement, starring Audrey Tautou, is not entitled to French funding. The film's production company, 2003 Productions, is owned by associates of the French branch of Warner Brothers; the court decided that even though the film was shot in France with French talent, the involvement of Warner Brothers makes it essentially a Hollywood production. French producers are all about this - "The verdict ends a pseudo-legal uncertainty," read a statement from the Association of Independent Producers, with a triumphant exclamation point implied - but the French Culture Ministry wants to reform current regulations to allow home-grown productions with American producers to access the French cash.
